Special Dal Fry, Hyderabadi Pulao, Haleem in Karachi, Gulistan e Johar | Street Food PK
Gulistan-e-Johar is a vibrant Karachi neighborhood offering a mix of traditional and contemporary food experiences. Zia Tabarak explored some standout dishes here.
The Dal Dry at a small dhaba was the highlight of the trip. This humble dish, made by slow-cooking split chickpeas (chana dal) until tender and then frying them with onions, tomatoes, garlic, and spices, delivered a bold and satisfying flavor. Garnished with fresh coriander and green chilies, it was paired perfectly with soft naan, offering an authentic taste of Karachi’s street food culture.
At Lucky Foods, Zia tried the Hyderabadi Pulao, a rice dish rooted in the culinary traditions of Pakistan’s Hyderabad. Made with long-grain rice, mild spices, and tender chicken, the dish is known for its balanced flavors. However, the taste this time was average, lacking the richness typically associated with this delicacy.
At Jahanzaib Haleem, Zia enjoyed a classic Haleem, a slow-cooked blend of lentils, wheat, barley, and shredded meat. This hearty dish was garnished with crispy fried onions, fresh ginger, and a squeeze of lime, providing a flavorful finish to the day’s culinary journey.
This exploration of Gulistan-e-Johar offers a glimpse into its diverse food scene, with dishes ranging from simple street food to regional classics.
